How to Actually Rank on Google as a Montreal Small Business (2026)
Most Montreal small-business owners have been pitched SEO at least once. The pitch is usually some version of "we'll help you rank #1 on Google" for an opaque monthly fee. The reality is that ranking is the predictable outcome of doing five specific things consistently — and nothing fancy beyond that. Here is what those five things are, in priority order, written so you can run them yourself or check whether the person you hired actually did them.
The two trees of SEO
Google ranks websites along two parallel tracks: the "local pack" (the map block at the top of local searches) and the "organic results" (the regular blue links). They use different ranking signals and they're won by different work. For a Montreal small business, the local pack is usually the higher-leverage target because the search intent is closer to "ready to buy" — someone searching "web designer Montreal" is much further down the funnel than someone searching "what is custom web design."
You need both tracks. The local pack gets you visible to high-intent searchers; organic results catch the awareness-stage traffic that becomes high-intent later. The five items below are sequenced by leverage — do them top-down, don't skip ahead.

These are the technical floor. Without them, no amount of content effort matters because Google literally can't see the site.
Check yours: open Google Search Console (free, takes 5 minutes to verify your domain), submit your sitemap, then run a URL inspection on your top 5 pages. If Search Console reports a problem, fix it before doing anything else. If it doesn't, move to step 3.
3) Core Web Vitals — the speed floor
Since 2021, Google explicitly uses three speed metrics as ranking signals: Largest Contentful Paint (how fast the main content loads), Interaction to Next Paint (how fast the page responds to taps), and Cumulative Layout Shift (how much the layout jumps around as it loads). Together these are called Core Web Vitals.
Run a free Lighthouse audit on your mobile homepage (Chrome DevTools → Lighthouse → Mobile). If your Performance score is below 70, you're losing rank to faster competitors. Below 50 and you're effectively invisible on competitive searches. Most Wix and Squarespace sites land between 40 and 65. Custom code routinely hits 95+. This is the ranking ceiling almost no one talks about.
- LCP target: under 2.5 seconds
- INP target: under 200 milliseconds
- CLS target: under 0.1 (basically zero layout shift)
4) Schema markup — speak Google's language

5) Content that answers actual questions
